Mitchell Welding & Iron Works was called in to repair the deteriorated structural steel supporting the first floor and roof of the Red Horse Motel in Wildwood Crest, NJ. The steel was completely rusted away and the integrity of the precast slabs was in jeopardy. Small cracks were starting to appear in the walkways as the steel was giving way. Temporary supports needed to be installed to support the precast, the rusted steel and columns were removed and the new steel beams were installed to resupport everything as new.
Rusting support beams is a common occurance in a lot of motels in the area. Salt air and moisture feed on steel enclosed by wood. With no way for the moisture to escape, it feeds on the steel and rots away everything it can. Owners of Utz’s Potato chips are almost done their 14,000 sq. ft. mansion in the dunes in Avalon, NJ.
